Brigadier R G U Rajapakshe is an Armor Officer who was enlisted on 02 June 1986 to Kotelawala Defence Academy Intake IV. After successful completion of academic courses at KDA and military training at Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa he was commissioned on 17 August 1988. During his career he had held all appointments at unit lines commensurate with his rank. He was unique to hold the appointment of Commanding Officer of two Regiments in Armored Corps during crucial combat period. 5th Reconnaissance Regiment and 4th Armored Regiment from December 1999 to August 2002 and from January 2004 to April 2006 respectively.

He also was the Commandant of Armored Corps Training Centre from September 1997 to December 1999. He was privileged to hold Course Officer’s and Senior Instructor’s appointments at Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa in 1990-1992 and in year 2003 respectively.

He had held vital appointments at Army Headquarters such as Colonel Media- Directorate of Media, General Staff Officer I (Operations)-Directorate of Operations, Colonel Military Secretary and Assistant Military Secretary (additional) at Military Secretariat’s Branch.

Brigadier Rajapakshe had commanded two infantry brigades; 662 and 234 Bdes in high intensity battles during humanitarian operations in years 2008 and 2009. Before being appointed in the present appointment, he was the Commander of Armored Brigade for almost three years.

Brigadier Rajapakshe is a professional small arms coach and a Paratrooper. He had also been injured in the field and had been awarded Desha Puthra Medal and had been awarded Rana Sura Padakkama for three times for his valour in the field.

During his over 30 years of military career he had followed many courses in India, Bangladesh and USA. He is an alumni of National Defence University, Washington DC, USA. Brigadier Rajapakshe is a graduate of Defence Services Command and Staff College securing 1st in Order of Merit.

He is a graduate of KDU with BSc in Defence Studies and University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka with a MSc. Brigadier Rajapakshe obtained a Diploma in Counter Terrorism from College of International and Security Affairs, NDU, Washington DC, USA and a Masters on Strategic Security Studies (MASSS) from NDU, Washington DC, USA. He also had followed Joint Operations Planning Course under the guidance of Ministry of Defence, UK, in Bangladesh in year 2008. He has served as the Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies from 15^th September 2016 to 03^rd May 2023.
