The history of the Faculty runs back to the late 90s, and it was then first established as the MSc Section in 2001 to offer the MSc (Defence Studies) Degree in Management for senior officers of the Tri-Services, Police, and also for those in the public and private Sector. With the high demand for the Master’s Degree program, the University introduced the BSc (Defence Studies) Degree in Management for deserved middle-level officers in 2003. The MSc Section was first renamed in 2004 as the Staff Development and Career Advancement Division, then in 2007 as the Institute of Postgraduate Studies, and finally in 2012 as the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS).The faculty is now housed in a six-storied building with an auditorium and ultra-modern state-of-the-art facilities built to expand its scope of activities. As specified, Faculty of Graduate Studies of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University is responsible for conducting all Postgraduate Degree programmes at KDU, which will ultimately contribute significantly to national development. Further, FGS provides opportunities for candidates to establish links with local and international scientists via local and international institutes. Postgraduate students are always encouraged to publish their research work in Indexed journals, peer reviewed journals and communicate those in both local and international research conferences. In addition, FGS has planned to commence a day school in the new building, where diverse courses of study will be available for a wider segment of learners.
